Sydney Flower Market Visit

Sydney Flower Market Visit

A day in the life of a florist… Behind the scenes peek into our morning routine.

We are so lucky to be able to have built a business from our passion. So much so that we thought you may like to hear about what a day in the life, actually the morning, of a florist actually entails! It’s not all roses (pun intended!) but we do love it!One of our highlights has to be our early morning trips to the Sydney Flower Market. We like hand picking our flowers, seeing the seasonal changes and choosing the freshest blooms. I get such a buzz from smelling the season's first bunch of fragrant sweet pea, seeing buckets filled with an abundance of garden roses or finding a tiny bunch of delicate lily of the valley.

Did you know that the Sydney Flower Markets are Australia’s largest market for fresh cut flowers and that during its history (it’s been around since the First Fleet) it was once housed at the Queen Victoria Building?

Market days start early. And when I say early, I mean …early…! Up and out the door by 4:30am, there is always a buzz of excitement as we drive down Parramatta Road in the dark, even on cold winter’s day when its less than 5°C. There’s never any traffic at that time.

The doors of the Sydney Flower Market open at 5am, but that’s halfway through the day for most of our growers and suppliers who’re already set up with all their blooms and plants, ready for sale.

We think our growers and suppliers are quite amazing! We have trusted them with providing us with the best quality flowers for many years. It’s great to see their faces every few days, – perhaps chat about seasonal flower availability, sourcing garden roses for an upcoming wedding or their latest family news or an upcoming flower show as we go through our buying lists.

After we’ve selected our flowers, we load the blooms, foliage and plants into our van and do a last minute check of our list to make sure we’ve got everything. Our suppliers of vases, florist foam, bouquet wrapping paper and ribbon are all there at the Sydney Flower Market bright and early too so we can restock if we need to.

Once we leave the Sydney Flower Market, we quickly stop at home for breakfast and head to Lane Cove. We carry all our purchases past The Cake Man and into our boutique store before we unpack our flowers, inspect and condition every stem.

As the store opens, we bustle about displaying the fresh flowers and creating ordered bouquets and arrangements in between chatting to our first customers for the day. It may mean early starts, but nothing compares to the buzz of the market and the pleasure of hand picking all of our own blooms to make sure they’re of the highest quality.

Thanks for reading and we hope you enjoyed this little insight into our day, Ludmila
