Roses, Hydrangea, Magnolias… Chatswood is full of beautiful flowers

Many people think of Chatswood, on Sydney’s north shore, as a mini-CBD these days. There are many commercial and residential towers at its heart, as well as a thriving shopping hub with Westfield Chatswood and Chatswood Chase. However, the suburb actually sprawls all around the central business, shopping and transport hub and, even among all those towers, there are stunning little pockets of flowers and greenery to be found.

Within the CBD area, the Garden of Remembrance next to the train station features delightful rows of roses and a sombre remembrance cross. A Dawn Service is held in the garden every year on Anzac Day, 25th April.The trees dotted along the esplanade from the train station to Victoria Avenue and the gardens between the residential towers on Railway Parade provide a splice of greenery among all the high rises and are surprisingly calm and tranquil places. 

You only need to travel one or two streets past the CBD before you’re immersed in a family-friendly, community focused suburb. The period homes and traditional front gardens are well-tended and there are plenty of flowers along Chatswood’s suburban streets to keep you smiling. We love strolling along in Autumn and enjoying the vibrant and colourful camellias and striking blooms of the late flowering hydrangea. Winter sees the gorgeous magnolias in flower, with the Spring streets a vision of wildflowers, roses, azalea and jasmine whose perfume is abundant in the spring air.

Beauchamp Park’s Rose Garden is a particularly lovely place for a stroll any time of the year but especially when the roses are flowering mid Spring to Summer. Spring garden beds display camellias, azaleas and magnolias nestled below a canopy of eucalypts.

The children's playground is very popular with local families and has plenty of play equipment including a fabulous flying fox. If you look carefully you will see quite a few artworks dotted throughout the park as well as an unleashed dog area for your four legged friends. Beauchamp Park is located at Nicholson Street Chatswood and is a 10-15 minute walk from Chatswood Station. 

We love the concept of The Hub Community Garden in Devonshire Street. They meet fortnightly to encourage sustainable, organic and bush-friendly gardening and anyone is welcome to participate. Willoughby Council also frequently run workshops on keeping chickens in your backyard and guided bushwalks too.
